How to customize “internal search” reports in Yahoo! Analytics

This is a quick how-to tutorial, since i got this issue just this week.

The situation: a customer (newspaper website) wanted to empower his editors to get a quick overview about what the users are searching for on the website – in this moment.

YWA offers a set of nice reports regarding internal search:

  • Top internal searches
  • Zero results internal searches
  • Internal Search conversion
  • Internal search usage

Nice! We are allowed to have a look on what the users are searching for, and even what search terms have no results on the website.

The problem: I was asked to build a custom report where the internal search phrases are sorted by hour, so the editors have a better understanding about what the users are looking for in this even moment. But whats happening here: On the “top internal searches report” the “customize report” button is missing:

No panic, there is a solution for this. In the settings-area we have a nice button called “Build custom reports”. So, go on and build up your own internal search phrases by hour report:

What we got here? All the metrics and groups we need to build up a report for your needs.

Once clicked on “show report”, we got exactly what we were looking for:

What we learned: Since Yahoo! Analytics and it´s custom report builder is very flexible, there are often several ways to get on the data you are looking for. Be creative, combine this or other reports with filters. Start segmenting and interact with your data!

This is no sience, it´s more creation and interaction…. numbers can be fun; even for me (and i am really really not that much into numbers) ;-)
